They Don’t Just See Power

It used to be simple: Build the substation. Run the line. Power the grid.

Back then, no one asked what it looked like. No one questioned how it felt to live next to it. But that’s changed.

Now substations are built in neighborhoods. Near schools. Parks. Apartments. Sidewalks. And whether the public understands what they’re looking at or not—they see it.  And what they see stays with them.

It doesn’t matter how reliable the system is if the first impression is neglect.  That’s the problem no one talks about. Not the voltage. Not the grounding. The perception.

Because if a site looks careless, that’s what people assume it is. And if it sparks enough backlash, it doesn’t matter how well it performs—it just became a problem.

We’ve watched franchise agreements get questioned over bad aesthetics. We’ve watched public meetings derail over chain-link and brush. And we’ve helped turn no’s into yeses—by designing with intent before the tension ever started.

Some utilities have figured it out. Southern California Edison was investing in aesthetics 50 years ago. Today, we’re seeing substation projects evaluated like architecture: From street view. From a kitchen window. At night. Through the eyes of the people who live beside it. That’s not an overreach. That’s reality.

Because equipment might power the grid. But it also represents you—24/7. So what do we do? We design systems that consider more than security.

We pay attention to sightlines, scale, context, and color. We don’t build fences that beg to be noticed. We build protection that fits—quietly, cleanly, confidently.

Not because the work should disappear. But because it should never become the story.

We’re not saying substations need to be invisible. We’re saying they need to be considered. And that starts with the barrier.

If you’re building near the public, you’re building in front of an audience.  Whether you like it or not—they’re watching. And they don’t just see power. They see you.
